I need a job reference, can I use my course instructor?

Updated over a week ago

🥜 In a nutshell:

Your EntryLevel course is not a job experience and instructors cannot serve as job references. Instead, seek references from professionals who have directly observed your work.

Unfortunately, course instructors at EntryLevel are not suitable references for your job application.

Can EntryLevel provide reference?

First, your EntryLevel course is not a job or internship, and as such does not meet the criteria to be included as a job on your application.

Next, our instructors focus primarily on course development and facilitation, which limits their capacity to form personal connections with individual students. This structure is necessary to maintain the quality and scale of our courses but it means that instructors lack the detailed insight into your specific skills and accomplishments that a job reference typically provides.

Further, given that instructors interact with numerous students across different sessions and cohorts, they are not equipped to provide the personalized endorsements that potential employers seek. Using them as references could inadvertently weaken your job application rather than strengthen it.

Who can give you job references?

We encourage you to seek references from professionals who have directly observed your work and can vouch for your abilities and work ethic. This might include supervisors from internships, employment, volunteer positions, or even leaders of project groups in which you've been involved in the past or current work experience. These individuals are more likely to provide meaningful and supportive references that can effectively boost your job prospects.

Preferred references

Employers usually look for references who can provide detailed and credible information about your work ethic, skills, and accomplishments. Ideal references include:

  • Supervisors from internships or jobs: They have direct oversight of your work and can speak to your job performance and reliability.

  • Volunteer coordinators: If you’ve volunteered, these individuals can vouch for your commitment and contributions.

  • Project leaders: Leaders of projects you’ve actively participated in can attest to your skills and teamwork abilities.

  • Academic advisors or mentors: They can provide insights into your academic achievements and growth.

While our instructors at EntryLevel are dedicated to your education and development, the best references come from those who have closely worked with you and can attest to your capabilities and achievements. Choose your references wisely to ensure they provide the most impactful and positive endorsements for your career advancement.
